Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love to learn and read. Our library needs to be updated so that they can continue their joy for reading and improve their literacy and vocabulary skills.
The students in my classroom present as atypical learners on the autism spectrum.
These young learners are very curious and enjoy a wide variety of learning experiences. The right resources have the ability to captivate their interests and increase focus for longer periods of time. I will have most of these students for the next two years and books are a major part of our curriculum. Many of them have beginning literacy skills such as letter sound recognition. It is my goal to move my students to more inclusive settings and the ability to sit and read is an important step in moving the children to a less restrictive environment.
My Project
Books are an important resource in any classroom. Durable board books are an important piece of my library as the students can choose these books freely and not worry about damaging them (although even board books need to be replaced over time). These books will go right into our literacy center and will be used during reading class or whenever a child chooses to read during choice time. The books will enhance skills such as literacy, labeling & identifying common pictures and the ability to focus for longer periods of time.
This is my fifteenth year teaching preschoolers who present as being on the autism spectrum.
I know how important books are in any classroom. I have taught in settings with very few resources and I have seen the difference that the right resources can make in the life of my students. As my teaching skills have improved as well as access to the right resources, so have the skills of my students improved. Your donation will make a major impact in their lives.
