A Library At Our Fingertips

My students need 4 electronic tablets to check out online books for independent reading and to conduct research. They will be a great tool and incentive in our classroom.

My Students

Help us to READ MORE! Electronic tablets will be a great asset to our classroom. With only 2 computers in our class, our students need more opportunities to use technology in our reading classroom. Tablets would enable our students to have access to many online books while motivating many non-readers.

Our students are wonderful kids who often times need a little extra guidance, support, and motivation.

Our school works hard to give many resources to our students but many times we fall short. In this day and age students love technology and many of them are extremely motivated by the opportunity to use it in the classroom. Our students are no different. They have little access to computers and technology in their homes and often do not have the skills or knowledge needed to succeed in a world full of technological advances. Right now our boy/girl ratio is nearly 2:1. Something I have noticed with many of our male students is the lack of motivation for reading because they have not found something their heart desires yet. Many boys and girls enjoy using technology and we have used our computers with them to give them that extra motivation. Our students sometimes have little support at home and we work very hard to keep them wanting to learn, working hard and succeeding.

My Project

With tablets accessible in our classroom, my students will have the amazing opportunity to access thousands of books on our district elibrary. The students have their own accounts and can check out books and read them on the computer or tablet device. Our students spend 90 minutes a day in an uninterrupted reading block in which much of their time is spent independently reading. Since many of them do not have access to these books at home or do not visit the public library, it will give many of them the opportunity to read many new books. Also, it will be a great motivator to our students. Those that have little interest in reading will be more likely to "pick up a book" if it is on a tablet that they find interesting. They will also be used as an incentive for those students to keep reading. In addition to independent reading on the tablet, they will be used for many research opportunities in all subject areas, especially Science and Social Studies.

These tablets will be a bright spot in our day as well as a motivation to READ and use technology every day!

With nearly half of my students reading below grade level, this might be the one thing that gets them reading. The more they read on their own, the more successful they will be!
