My Project
There will always be a place in our library for classic children's books, but there needs to be so many more options that the typical "boy and their dog" books. This collection of books with give my classroom library a HUGE boost, and will allow my diverse students to see themselves reflected in the stories that they read. Books with immigrant heroes, brave and outspoken females, and characters who use their ADHD or Autism as a strength will help my students feel confident about their differences and build empathy for others' unique qualities.
These new books will be previewed early when students participate in a "Book Tasting" to sample the first few pages of books in our library.
While students will have access to these books throughout the year during independent reading, particular books will be features during parts of the year like Black History Month, AAPI Heritage Month, and Disability Awareness Month. I can't wait to see the joy on students' faces when they connect with characters in the book, learn more about their own heritage, and build empathy and understanding towards classmates who may be different than themselves. Thank you for your support!
