I would like to inspire my high-need, low income, multicultural 10th grade students by having them read "A Lesson Before Dying" by Ernest J. Gaines. I teach English with emphasis on preparing for college, literacy, and social justice.
The school lacks the resources for non-canonical books by writers of color, and every year, I grab my students interest when I teach a unit on social justice.
A class set of 38 copies of "A Lesson Before Dying" by Ernest J. Gaines is the perfect book my 10th grade students need to read to satisfy their thirst for knowledge about the death penalty and racial discrimination while becoming future fighters of social justice. In addition to using this book in our study of social justice and literacy, I would also incorporate a historical look at segregation and hold an in-class debate on the death penalty.
Your donation will help broaden the minds of sophomores in my district. After reading this book, 10th graders will be inspired to change the world and make justice something truly for all.
