This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How do we teach students that are so academically behind their peers to catch up? Especially when they are faced with the knowledge of the cruelties this world has to offer on a daily basis. Instead, I want to teach them to surpass.

The students in my class have special needs including learning disabilities and emotional disturbance.

Many of my students have experienced school as a place that they are unsuccessful. A place that they do not want to go to. A place where they are punished for being unable to do the work. The students in my class range in reading and math skills from pre-kindergarten to first-grade levels. 100% of my students come from minority populations. Our school is a Title I School with 100% of students receiving free lunch.

My students are different than the typical stigma of students with this type of disability. They are smart. They are kind. They now enjoy coming to school because they know all they have to do is try and I am one happy teacher. Give them the tools necessary for daily life and watch them blow your minds.

My Project

The goal of my classroom is always to create a safe, comforting, and real-life learning environment for my students. We do this by creating an ambience that feels like a home should feel, in which students feel safe to leave their comfort zone and take risks to achieve greater learning of academic and social skills alike.

We will use this sofa to continue pursuing changing our room into that safe home-like environment.

In the past, students have shown an increase of 75% in desire to read when they have a comfortable reading space. Also, with our last couch, we should a 62% increase in respecting the classroom environment and being responsible with our materials. For anyone that has taught in a social emotional setting, you know this is quite an accomplishment!
