A Learner Active Classroom: Getting Students Excited to Learn!
My students need furniture, organizers, timers, card stock paper, geoboards, and incentive charts for a classroom where they have the opportunity to take ownership over their own learning and have fun at the same time!
In my classroom, I work with students who learn in a variety of different ways and, in order for them to learn to the best of their ability, require necessary modifications to help them succeed. I teach in two different types of classrooms. I have a group of students in an in-class support, co-teaching classroom for math, and I have two groups of students in a resource pull-out math classroom. All three of these groups contain students who work at a variety of different levels and speeds, while also having various learning disabilities and learning styles that impact the way that they learn. All of my students learn the same math content as the general education population. However, the resources needed to teach them in a way that they can comprehend the material are different than their peers'.
"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn" -Ignacio Estrada.
With every student in each class needing their own modifications and differentiation, and being in such a small town, my school does not have the funding (nor does my wallet) to provide all of the materials needed to help these students fully succeed.
My Project
In my classroom, I aim to have students take control of their own learning and have fun while doing so. With the LATI (Learner Active, Technology Infused) style classroom that I have implemented, students are able to take the materials given to them and explore the topic in the way that agrees with their specific learning style. The resources that I am funding for, including: baskets, hanging folders, plastic organizers, index card holders, timers, card stock paper, folder holding boxes, geoboards, and incentive charts will all help me differentiate for each of those different learning styles and get students engaged!
The goal of these resources and the LATI style classroom is to provide students with many different activities and assignments that teach the same concept, but in different ways.
The bins will hold all of the materials for students, the hanging pocket holders and the filing bins will be organized to hold the different activities and student work, the card stock will help differentiate the different types of activities that I will provide based on their colors, the index card holders will be used for important vocabulary terms and for rewards, the geoboards provide an interesting way to teach area and perimeter, and finally the incentive charts will hold students accountable and show their progress with their basic math skills which we will be working on in addition to the sixth grade curriculum. Futhermore, I want to implement more flexible seating options, such as the bed rest pillows and bean bag chairs that I ordered so that students are able to work in an environment that they feel comfortable learning in and enjoy coming to every day! All of these resources will help me address the needs of each individual student while helping them find their passions in school!
