My Students
"Children are great imitators. So give them something great to imitate" is something I truly believe in. By giving my students the power to listen to books every day, my hope is that they "imitate" the good reading that they hear.
Our school promotes a "Kids First" attitude, and every decision that is made is based on how it will impact our students.
My students are an amazing group of children who come from hardworking, lower middle-class families. Many of these families have parents that are working two or more jobs to keep their families afloat. For some of them, school is the only real constant in their lives. My class is very eager to learn, and they all want to become better readers. I am very fortunate to have students who want to read and who want feel accomplished. As an educator I want them to have every opportunity to feel successful in the classroom and to be able to read a good book.
My Project
We call our classroom a learning lab because we believe all students can learn and need to be challenged at their academic level. We use innovative ideas and research based strategies as a conduit which facilitates learning and enhances creativity. I have this same attitude in my classroom. My students are eager to learn and come to school each day filled with enthusiasm. Our classroom uses the reading program the Daily 5, and they read 5 times as much as the typical classroom. Students in our learning lab read to themselves, to partners, to teachers, to volunteers, and they listen to reading. By getting LeapFrog Reading Systems my students would be able to read books independently and have a tool that would help them sound out words without having a teacher, parent, or volunteer present. In a class of 32 it is very difficult to listen to everyone at the same time. It is also very difficult to help students sound out words when they are reading independently.
Any tool that can give assistance to beginning readers while they decode and read books without a teacher present needs to be in all classrooms.
You have the opportunity to help create life-long readers! By increasing their fluency, my students will have the resources necessary for them to excel in their education. They probably won't realize the magnitude of your generous gift now, but will be grateful for it in the future.
