This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have figured it out! I know how to get students excited about research. I just have to tell them that they will be doing it on a Laptop. It is that simple. Some how using a laptop makes it more interesting and of course fun and easy to do.
My students approach life with the enthusiasm and curiosity that all five-year-olds seem to have in abundance.
Despite living in a low socioeconomic area where their parents struggle to make ends meet, they are incredibly hopeful and looking forward to the future. Their parents want the best education possible for them but due to financial constraints, many cannot afford to have up to date technology at home. It is up to me and the school to provide these wonderful, amazing, eager and bright kids with experiences using technology. We are a Title I school, which means that we do get funds to improve the academic achievement of the disadvantaged, but not enough to provide every student with a computer, lap top or tablet. Because we are such a big school, we only get a chance to go to the computer lab twice a month for fifty minutes. These kids WILL be our future leaders. They deserve more exposure and experience with the technology that will shape tomorrow.
My Project
We are constantly doing research in my classroom. Not on topics that I haphazardly select, but on topics that my students are genuinely interested in learning about. Unfortunately, we usually have to wait for our turn to go to the library or the computer lab to start on our research. The waiting can be exasperating as we only get to go twice a month to the library and computer lab. I cannot ask for my students do the research at home because most, if not all, of my students do not have computers at home. And in my classroom I only have one working desktop. Having a classroom set of four or five laptops would allow my students to do their research immediately. We would also be able to move on from one project to the next at a much faster pace. An added and obvious benefit is that my students will become more comfortable with technology itself.
Doing research is an essential skill that all students need.
Why not start in kindergarten? The more skilled that they become at it, the more prepared that they will be for the challenge of high school and college. Doing the research on a laptop simplifies the process and makes it more fun for students. Help me help my students along in this process.
