I am working towards a district-wide implementation of the AVID program. My classes will be the pilot program for our district. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program for first-generation, college-bound students. My kids enter the program as low socioeconomic, middle of the pack students. They stay with me throughout high school and exit college ready with most receiving significant if not completely funded financial aid. The program breaks the cycle of poverty we see and cope with daily.
My Project
This next year I am assisting with the development of the pilot program of our district-wide roll out of the AVID curriculum and teaching our first course. AVID is a program designed for first-generation, college-bound students who are traditionally under-served in secondary education: minorities, LGBT, low socioeconomic, etc. Our program fills in the gaps students missed in their education to date and prepares them for college success.
Over the next year, I will be conducting professional development activities related to "best practices" teaching, including how to directly benefit students like my AVID kids.
I need a laptop that will be easy to transport and be dependable as these activities will largely involve PowerPoint presentations and video demonstrations. My current laptop is a beast and it's crying to be replaced. It is large and old, but I need to keep it in class for substitute use and, often, student use when our desktops fail.
This laptop will assist me as a presenter at both the national CTE Vision conference and our Utah CTE conference, throughout a multitude of AVID presentations throughout our district and the state. These will all be professional development activities for administrators, teachers, and staff. It's going to be a busy year.
