A Kinesthetic Experience in Fifth Grade

My students need small group book sets, hands-on electricity and electronics manipulatives, art supplies, and everything for my very kinesthetic classroom!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Roh's classroom raised $2,005

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students are sharks (voracious learners) and dolphins (sociable, pleasant, interactive, work well in groups). I have two class motto's: "The harder you work, the easier it gets" and, "I can do hard things."

Currently I have 31 students in my fifth grade class.

I teach all subjects-- language arts, math, science, social studies, etc. I have many first generation immigrant students from Tonga, Mexico, and Vietnam along with a healthy assortment of unique family backgrounds. (Thankfully, I am fluent in Spanish which really helps when I receive Spanish-speaking students that don't speak any English). Although I have 31 students, we don't have the funds for additional adult math or reading aides in the classroom. It is my understanding that our school qualifies as a Title I school, however, our district already has the maximum number of Title I schools, so we have all the challenges without all the funding. This means my students have to learn to work productively in small groups. I have students who are above level and students who are reading as low as a first grade level. My students know of my love and commitment to make every day a memorable one.

My Project

All of the electronics, electricity/magnetism, snap circuits, makey makey and littlebits are so terrific for students to use in small groups. There is an amazing amount of energy that occurs when students explore science in a hands-on environment. Exploring cannot be done via worksheets. They have to see it to believe it and understand it. I guide my students to consider, explore, hypothesize, experiment and defend what they discover. I especially love it when they have the materials to do so. We use clay to explore concepts in science and in math. The kiln supplies will replace what I have used and gone through in the past. Last year we were unable to use the kiln because we were out of the supplies. The book sets supplement my growing classroom library. I like having smaller groups that read a book at the same time, discuss the chapter they have read (on their own), and then write a brief summary of their discussions supporting their points with evidence from the texts.

Oh my goodness.

I can't imagine how amazing it will be for my students to actually understand electronics and circuitry. What students wouldn't be ecstatic as they squish clay in their hands while we go over the many concepts I can squeeze out of having clay in the classroom? Every time a student completes a book within a book group, they feel a sense of shock and awe. Many of my students haven't finished a book ever by the time they reach fifth grade. That is a life changer right there.
