Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember reading that first book that helped you develop a love of reading? Do you remember those integrated art lessons during math or history class?
My students are from one of the poorest and most violent cities in the country.
Every day they strive to broaden their horizons and reach for the stars. For many, school is the only safe haven they know. I work to teach them that there is a bigger world out there than the one they see every day, that they matter, and that they will always have a safe place to explore the world around them in our classroom.
My Project
Camden is the poorest and one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. School is typically the only safe haven these kids know. Our schools, for a variety of reasons, lack the resources to provide these amazing kids with the education they deserve. You're giving them the opportunity to dream of a better future.
These kids have never experienced the excitement of a prom.
Their parents have never seen their kids' faces as they are preparing for this big moment in their young lives. This is something that takes place in every community across our country and last year because of the support of donors on DonorsChoose.org, we were able to have our first Junior Prom.
This year, we want this class of juniors to experience the prom, too. That's why we need runners, lanterns and table clothes to make junior prom a special night for these amazing kids.
These kids just deserve a night where they can leave behind their stressful existences growing up in a place where their monsters are real and violence is commonplace. That's why I want to make this Junior Prom special.
Last year was the first year we have had a Junior Prom at WWHS. This year I want to make the prom even better than before. We hold the Junior Prom in our gym due to financial issues. However, I want to truly transform the gym in such a way that the kids can't tell they are in the gym. We are raising money to purchase a prom theme set and other decor. Anything you can give would be great. All the items listed are to decorate the prom and make it a night to remember for these kids.
