This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
What path will your journey take? That's the question my students will attempt to answer over the next year as they embark on a journey of self-discovery and dreams.
My students are gifted first, second, third and fourth graders - 111 students who love learning.
They come together once a week from five different elementary schools to explore the world of learning in a different way from their regular classroom setting. This year they will be embarking on a journey as we participate in an author study of Peter Reynolds' Creatrilogy (The Dot, Ish and Sky Color) as well as three other of his books - I'm Here (about an autistic child), Rose's Garden (about Rose Kennedy) and The North Star (about finding your own path and following your own star). These books were chosen as part of the Global Read Aloud this year, a global project connecting students around the globe with literature. In addition to the journals, students will connect online with blogs, tweets, and wikis to share globally.
My Project
The students will use the materials in this project to create a journal as they describe their own journey, the dreams they have and the decisions they make along the way. We are asking for art supplies (paints, paper, markers, crayons and color pencils) for this purpose. In addition we are asking for a thermal binding machine so that each students work can be bound into a journal at the end of the year. This will be an ongoing project, so students in first grade will eventually have four years of journals by the time they leave the program in fourth grade. These materials will allow students to express themselves artistically, to reflect upon their learning, to set goals for themselves, and, in time, to see the journey they have taken over the past year (or more).
The art supplies (paints, water pots, markers, crayons, pencils and papers) will provide them with the supplies they need to be creative in the way they put their journal together.
The binding machine will allow us to bind their books to make them a more permanent reminder of their journey. In addition we are asking for binders for new students and filler paper for all student binders to do their class work for the project. Thank you for your consideration and support of public education.
