Dear Donors Choose Community,

This year, I would love to provide my students with a class set of Wonder by RJ Palacio - a beautifully written book about a young boy named Auggie who has a facial difference and navigates the ups and downs of starting middle school.

It’s a powerful story about kindness, empathy, friendship, and how we should all strive to "choose kind" in every situation.

Why Wonder?

Wonder is an incredible tool for teaching my students not only about reading, but also about social-emotional growth. With its themes of acceptance, kindness, and overcoming challenges, it’s a story that will resonate with my students and open their hearts and minds to important lessons. The characters in Wonder will inspire my students to be more understanding of their peers, to see the world through different perspectives, and to find their own courage to stand up for what is right.

Many of my students face challenges that are far beyond their years, and this book will provide them with a window into the experience of someone else who has to face something that makes them “different.” It will give my students the opportunity to discuss their feelings, relate to Auggie’s experiences, and build their empathy for others.

With a class set of Wonder, we will read the book together, engage in thoughtful discussions, and explore themes like self-acceptance, kindness, and the power of friendship. By having this shared experience, students will not only improve their reading comprehension and vocabulary, but also develop important life skills that will stay with them long after they finish the book.
