My Students

I am a Language Arts teacher at a middle school in New York City. The population of my school and class is very diverse. However, over 90% of my school's population receives free lunch, which is a strong indicator that the overwhelming majority of students come from lower-level income households. This is not usually an obstacle for my strong and determined students, but when it comes to asking them to purchase some essential supplies, we run into some obstacles.

I have 96 creative students who are looking for a place to express and be honest with themselves.

Writing in black and white notebooks every day becomes a physical and financial burden...especially with students going through over 4 books a year and marble notebooks are so impersonal. Kids need a special place to demonstrate their unique talents. In the past, my classes and I have even created our OWN journals out of construction paper and some staples and yar, but those books aren't the sturdiest and often quickly fall to pieces. What my students would go CRAZY for, what would really keep them motivated, would be if they each had a journal of their own to write in.

My Project

So I'm trying, with your help, to get my hands on some quality writing journals. These books are sure to inspire my students to write even more than they already do, and trust me...they LOVE to write. But their ideas, thoughts, and stories often get lost, fall apart, or just crumble into a mess of loose sheets. These kids deserve a proper journal that will securely hold all of the dreams and worries that they hold securely in their hearts and minds. They have countless issues and feelings that they need to talk about - and sometimes the best way to open up about these matters, is by writing them down. A personal writing journal for each student is the perfect solution!

If you have ever kept a journal or a diary, I am confident that you can understand how badly my students NEED these books!

Talking about certain topics is not always an option for my kids, but writing about it ALWAYS is. Recording your dreams and goals is a special process, especially when you'll be able to look at them years from now because you have kept the same SPECIAL journal all along. By funding this project, you will provide my students with something they desperately need, a place that they can always go - with a pen - to get things off of their chest. Kids NEED a place to write. My kids would feel so special to have their very own journal.
