This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Wow, I love this book!" I frequently hear comments such as this every day in my classroom. As we begin our small group lessons, my special needs students in kindergarten through third grade love selecting their very own book to take home and read that evening. Students ask for help finding books with their favorite characters like Strawberry Shortcake, or books from their favorite authors, such as Dr. Seuss. They come back the next day and tell exciting stories about how much they enjoyed reading the book at home with their families. Our small lending library builds a bridge from school to home to assist in reading and language development for students. There is truly nothing like seeing a child with a book he or she loves!
My Project
I started a lending library in my Resource classroom in Hollywood last year, with the generous help of friends through Donors Choose. This library has been a huge success with students and families throughout the age levels. I want to build my library further. Kindergarten students need access to more books emphasizing and teaching the alphabet, and rhyming, such as Dr. Seuss' ABC Book, while my third grade students are more than excited to take on chapter books about mice who talk, like Geronimo Stilton. Classic tales and fables provide rich, meaningful examples of language in context and my students just can't get enough. I want to provide more of the characters and formats they are asking for, as a means to developing their skills further. They are hungry to learn!
