A Hug of Calm for Little Learners

Help me give my students a safe and cozy calming corner where they can take a break, manage big feelings, and learn to regulate their emotions in a supportive preschool environment.

My Project

I absolutely love my preschool students for their curiosity, creativity, and big hearts. What makes my multi-age group of three, four, and five year olds special is their unique blend of varying needs and developmental stages. Each child is just beginning to learn how to manage and express their emotions in a safe and healthy way. Watching them navigate big feelings—excitement, frustration, anger or sadness—is inspiring. Their genuine expressions and eagerness remind me why emotional learning is so important at this age.

That’s why I want to create a safe and cozy calming corner in our classroom.

This space will have resources to support my students as they regulate emotions and practice problem-solving. Sensory tools like stress balls and textured toys offer tactile ways to calm their minds. Weighted stuffed animals will provide deep pressure comfort, helping to soothe anxiety and promote calmness, while also providing comfort and warmth, helping them feel secure when they need a moment to slow down. Breathing balls will guide my students through slow, mindful breaths, helping them learn to relax and reduce stress in the moment. Developmentally appropriate books about feelings and calming strategies help them identify and understand emotions. The calming corner will also include a cozy tent—a quiet retreat where students can feel safe and take a break.

By having this calming corner, my students will have a nurturing space to practice self-regulation and problem-solving. It teaches them it’s okay to take a break, reflect on feelings, and find healthy coping ways. Most importantly, it encourages independence and emotional resilience—skills that will help throughout their lives.

Creating this space shows my love and support for their emotional well-being. I can’t wait to see how it helps them feel safe, cozy, and ready to face each day with confidence.
