I have a group of smart, energetic and diverse pre-k students in the District 20 Brooklyn, New York area. Our children love to explore and interact with their environment. Our day is full of engaging in hands on activities, working together, and building a cohesive classroom community. The students family and ethnic backgrounds make our class enriching and full of culture. We have 5 different languages spoken in our classroom from Mandarin/Cantonese, Russian, Italian, Arabic and Spanish. When building a classroom community, our parents are involved in every step of the way by engaging in activities with us and teaching each other about the differences that make us special. Our students are not only learning the basic foundations of reading, writing, and math. They are also learning about cooperation, friendship, tolerance and respect.
Science is a huge part of our pre-k classroom. It teaches the students to be curious and ask questions during exploration. It encourages them to communicate with one another on their findings and observations. It especially engages the students who don't speak English or the children with special needs who are able to observe and interact in the science center independently. All our students have become more confident, independent and responsible.
After recently reading A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle, the students have become fascinated with the way hermit crabs create a home with their shell.
When getting our class pet hermit crabs, we will be learning all about what hermit crabs eat, how they make a home out of new shells once they've outgrown theirs, and how they interact with each other.
Students will observe and take care of crabs on a daily basis and keep a science journal where they can draw what they observe. Students will not only learn about the lifestyle of hermit crabs but they will also learn independence and responsibility by having to take care of a class pet. Let's give hermit crab a new home in our class!
