This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 27 energetic fourth graders in my New York City classroom. Many of the children come from low-economic households but they have big dreams. They understand the importance of a good education. Most of the students attend after school programs as well so they are expected to sit for the most part of the day at their traditional desks and chairs. Imagine sitting on uncomfortable chairs from 8:00 am to 6:00 p.m. Flexible seating options would make them more comfortable and give them an opportunity to move which is great for their brains.
My students work both in homogeneous groups and in heterogeneous groups in order to accomplish their daily learning targets.
Flexible grouping is not only an instructional strategy but it also teaches them how to work well with others which is a lifelong skill.
My students would be so excited to be the first class to have flexible seating in our school!
My Project
Our classroom library is in need of a makeover. Our bookcases are at least 20 years old and falling apart. We would like to be able to fit all of our books into sturdy bookcases. We love to read and want a good home for our books.
The library area is the heart of the classroom.
We are in the process of creating a cozy reading space. Our books are neatly organized in baskets. We categorized them by genre. However, the baskets get stuck in the old bookcases because the shelves fall off. The students take turns being the class librarians and often struggle to fit all the books correctly in their designated spots. The classroom library would be a more pleasant space if we could replace our old bookcases.
In addition, we could also use a laptop stand so it could be easier to present our work under the document camera. I need to model close reading skills and problem-solving skills in math for the children. If I would have a laptop stand I could put the laptop and document camera on it and still be able to face the students. They would also be able to come and show their work as well.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my the needs in my classroom.
