Help me give my students a shelf to store their individual book bins for easy access!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students come from loving, involved families in Pontiac, Michigan. Currently, 100% of them qualify for free or reduced price lunch. I joined this third grade community in November of 2018 and I am honored to be their teacher.
It is very important for me to be able for my students to access high-interest texts in a variety of genres in order for them to gain the knowledge needed to read for information.
Very few of my students are reading at or above grade level, with the majority of them just approaching grade level. As they learn to read, I quickly want them to be able to read to learn. This will help them navigate the approaching 3rd Grade Reading Law to go into effect next school year. But more importantly, gaining exposure to quality literature will allow them to become more well-rounded and well-read individuals ready to take on the world.
With a rolling bookshelf and individual book bins, students will be able to take responsibility for his or her own reading journey by providing a specific space to store their books in class.
The rolling book shelf will provide ample storage space for each student to store his or her own book bin for easy access to texts on his or her individual reading level.
The brightly colored book bins will provide a "home" for each student's on-level texts, as well as "stretch reads" and easy reading. My hope is that having the book bins available will cut down on transition time, leaving more time for what students should be doing more of ... reading!
