A Home Cooked Meal in School

Help me give my students a cart with cooking appliances to allow parents to share home cooked meals in school.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Andy's classroom raised $588

My Students

Our early childhood school is now in its 12th year serving the community. In our PreK class, that means over 180 students have come and gone from this classroom. Along with that, many other students have called our room home for enrichment classes, after-school programs, and summer camp.

Families send their precious children to our class every day, for us to help them take those first steps towards accomplishing great feats.

Our families are working class parents who often work long hours to provide for their children.

Children make this room their home for however long they stay and miss it dearly when they move on. It's something we take pride in, and we hope to continue doing what we love to do and that nurtures their love of learning.

I've been teaching, at my first and current school, for seven years. No matter who enters through that door, they are part of our school family. I hope to provide them with the absolute best education we can offer.

My Project

Food has the power to bring people together. If you think about important events, holidays, and long overdue gatherings, they are all made special because of the bonding and conversations that takes place over food.

The late Anthony Bourdain said “You learn a lot about someone when you share a meal together.”

My project hopes to build off a previous cooking cart project to create more opportunities for parent engagement and involvement in their child's education. The cart will be available for all classrooms as it can be rolled to any classroom with the necessary appliances on it.

The goal of this project will be addressing students with attendance issues in our school. It's a no brainer that if you're not in school, you're not learning and most likely falling behind. Whatever the reason may be, we believe if students feel at home in school, they'll want to come to school. We will be working with the families of students who have an attendance rate below 90%. If the parents are willing, they will be invited to talk about their culture and share home cooked meal with the students. Representation matters and when students see themselves represented in school and the curriculum, they will be invested and more willing to make an effort to come to school. The same holds true for establishing rapport with families.

To cap off this project, we would be able to combine our yearly parent association potluck with a cooking demonstration from our families in school.

To measure the success of this project, we will gather attendance data before the implementation of the project as a baseline, and compare with with attendance rate afterwards and continue to create more opportunities for families to come and share a home cooked meal in school.
