Help me give my students a cozy corner with books, figures to express positive character traits, and a bulletin board to display posters while fostering a growth mindset and learning about diversity and inclusion.
I am a third-grade teacher in a small Brooklyn neighborhood school. My students love to learn and are eager to come to school every day. School this year is different as they all have opted in for remote learning. When they first enter third grade, they are nervous. It is very different from second grade. They are at the halfway mark of elementary school and need to become more independent to prepare for the rest of their academics.
My students love to express themselves and effectively participate in class.
They are enthusiastic and full of energy. They are always ready to go on a new learning adventure. My goal is to give them the best learning experience and make it a memorable year.
My students have diverse backgrounds and range in academic ability from non-English to advanced learners and general education as well as special education students. My students are heterogeneously grouped. I believe the more engaged my students are, the better outcomes they will have.
My Project
My students are engaged in daily lessons that teach about Social Emotional Learning, Diversity and Inclusion. I teach my students when they have not reached their goal to think of it as "I am not there yet." This concept takes time to understand. Our first Google Meet of the Day begins with our agenda and a life lesson. Students complete a Google Slide and participate in class discussion on our live sessions.
Social Emotional Learning and Diversity and Inclusion needs to be addressed with our young learners.
These resources will bring new ideas to my class and used throughout the year. The books will serve as a read aloud and will foster many conversations. The characters will be used to model good citizenship. The posters will provide a visual for students to comment on and write a reflection. This will also build on their listening and speaking skills and ability to express themselves.
As we prepare to return to school it is crucial to continue these lessons and provide a cozy corner with a bulletin board that displays the different posters and a place to share their work. Also, the bins will be used to organize the books and other materials. I want my student to feel empowered and proud of who they are. These resources will help deliver valuable lessons and will be used remotely and when we return to our classroom.
