My students are very special. They are all diverse learners attending a neighborhood school in Chicago. I am their ELA teacher. These are students with significantly compromised reading abilities. Some are reading three plus years below current grade levels.
Like all learners, diverse learners thrive with multi-sensory instruction.
For this reason, my new classroom really needs an Elmo digital presenter. Elmo presenters are amazing; the make read aloud stories come to life, allow students to receive precision, close-up instruction - the details of which they would otherwise miss.
Something many of these children have in common is a lack of literacy immersion at home. Their parents are not themselves readers, and most have hardly been read to in their lives. They are hungry to be read to. This is why daily interactive read aloud is so important.
And there is nothing quite as delightful as the moment you place a new picture book under the Elmo and project it in brilliant color onto the screen. The same is true for teaching a math strategy, or sharing student work. My diverse learners will simply learn more content more quickly, more thoroughly, and with a higher level of engagement than ever before.
Everyone knows that an inviting and comfortable classroom environment is essential for learning. Flexible spaces allow students to select just the right spot.
A new rug and stools will provide the backdrop that is necessary for meaningful learning to take place.
Students can read independently on the rug as they cuddle up with some comfy pillows. Stools will push neatly under the table when not in use, preserving precious space in tight quarters.
In my rapidly growing school, we have run out of furniture. My students deserve a crisp new environment that will enhance learning every day. A rug and stools are needed!
