Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic and civically engaged sixth graders. Ethnically our school is about 55% Latino, 20% African-American, 10% Asian, and 5% White. About 50% of my students are English Language Learners of varying abilities, and the rest are native English speakers. They attend a Title I, inner-city school in a community-oriented neighborhood. My students and their families enjoy participating in school-sponsored events including craft night and our student-run multicultural fair.

My students desire to be challenged academically and to grow as critical thinkers.

In spite of the economic disparities and other difficulties my students face, I believe that they can all achieve greatness.

My Project

My students are eager to return to the physical classroom. They will have daily social-emotional learning time that will include picture book read-alouds such as, "Fry Bread". Upper-grade students still love having stories read aloud, and the pictures and content help all students regardless of English language ability participate in discussion. Art is an important part of my classroom instruction, and construction and drawing papers are used frequently in my classroom for math and arts integrated lessons. One of the first art lessons students complete is a study of lines, which helps them make connections to lines in math and patterns in science later in the school year. Bed risers will provide an alternative standing work space for students that focus better while standing or need space to move. Having basic hygiene materials available such as maxi-pads, deodorant, and masks will help keep students comfortable and safe as they learn about basic human development.

A strong start will lay the foundation for student success and achievement during the school year.

My classroom is a welcoming place for students. With the right materials to start the year I know my students realize their goals, build healthy relationships with their classmates, and accomplish great things this school year.
