A Great Day to Learn Something New: Flexible Seating Edition

My students need a variety of seating options, including wobble seats, stools, and carpet squares to allow them freedom to move within the classroom as they take charge of their learning.

My Students

My classroom focuses on the quote, "Today is a great day to learn something new." My students come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences and I want them to know that regardless of the challenges of one day, each new day offers them another opportunity for success. Together, we make each day a learning adventure. My students are inquisitive learners who are beginning to take their knowledge growth into their own hands through their use of technology, communication with each other, and a variety of 21st century skills.

My goal is to continue to improve and provide the absolute best learning experience for my students.

I try to incorporate movement and engagement between areas of the classroom- whole group, small group, partner opportunities and Kagan strategies which allow a variety of learning opportunities. I'd like to take this a step further to continue promoting ownership of their own learning, ability to better focus, and allow the movement opportunities they need at this age. My students are amazing and I can't wait to see what they do with given opportunities!

My Project

We are often finding ourselves promoting "21st century skills," yet when we step back and take a look around, realize that "the more things change, the more they stay the same" when it comes to our classrooms and the way children are expected to learn. My students this year are extremely lucky because they will have access to a tremendous amount of technology- a huge step in the right direction for preparing them for their futures! While this is a change, what has stayed the same is the classroom set-up they are expected to be in each day. The same desks and chairs that graced the schools when I was a student more years ago than I'd like to admit.

I like to promote my students making good decisions for themselves and their learning.

Our students need the ability to move, and to find a learning space that works best for them. That might mean a quiet corner of the classroom on a carpet square, or a wiggle seat that allows them to get a few "bounces" out while still completing their assignment. The reality is that what works for one child may not work for another, much in the same way that adults often need breaks in order to complete a task. I am excited about the research behind flexible seating in the classroom, and am so excited to see the increase in both productivity and excitement in my students as they learn how to properly make successful choices for themselves.
