We are often finding ourselves promoting "21st century skills," yet when we step back and take a look around, realize that "the more things change, the more they stay the same" when it comes to our classrooms and the way children are expected to learn. My students this year are extremely lucky because they will have access to a tremendous amount of technology- a huge step in the right direction for preparing them for their futures! While this is a change, what has stayed the same is the classroom set-up they are expected to be in each day. The same desks and chairs that graced the schools when I was a student more years ago than I'd like to admit. I like to promote my students making good decisions for themselves and their learning. Our students need the ability to move, and to find a learning space that works best for them. That might mean a quiet corner of the classroom on a carpet square, or a wiggle seat that allows them to get a few "bounces" out while still completing their assignment. The reality is that what works for one child may not work for another, much in the same way that adults often need breaks in order to complete a task. I am excited about the research behind flexible seating in the classroom, and am so excited to see the increase in both productivity and excitement in my students as they learn how to properly make successful choices for themselves.
