Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My children are capable of taking over the world. They are willing to learn, however, there are many gaps due to lack of experience and finance. Our school is a Title I school located in an economically disadvantaged area of South Florida in which 80% of the students receive free breakfast/lunch.

My disadvantaged students need reading materials!

Unfortunately, many of them can not afford to purchase their own books! My students are really interested in the real world. What is going on and why it’s happening. They want to make a difference by having real facts. That’s why these magazines would be so helpful and interesting.

My Project

Scholastic is a magazine written for the children at their grade level which explains current events in a fashion that children can comprehend. The magazines are not only educational but interesting. Scholastic will provide reading materials for my students to use at home as well as at school. This way the kids who do not have reading materials at home will benefit from high interest articles at a comprehension level they can understand.

The achievement gap between children from lower socio-economic backgrounds and those from more affluent backgrounds is growing all of the time.

This project will help me give my students the chance they need to become better readers and to be educated in current events.
