This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

All of my seniors deserve to be exposed to the classics before they fly the nest. These stories are considered foundational in the world of literature, yet so many kids in underfunded schools do not have access to such novels. My students love the story of The Metamorphosis by Frank Kafka, and relate easily to the themes of figuring out who they are in the world.

The original text is certainly a classic, but it can also be a bit daunting to read for some of my English Language Learners and students with learning differences.

Peter Straub's brilliant graphic novel iteration of the classic German text brings new life to the old story, making it more engaging and accessible for my students less comfortable with the Kafka book.

A class set of Straub's graphic novel would not only help bridge the divide for some of my students with language and learning differences, but it would also provide rich and engaging opportunities for comparison and creative collaboration with all students. Students today love graphic novels, and graphic novels in the classroom breathe new life into old texts while presenting these stories, themes, and concepts in a more artistic way.
