Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

To succeed academically, special education students need to have highly individualized materials, an organized and predictable environment, and incentives for behavior and learning.

By contributing to this project, you will be supporting educational equity for Black and Hispanic students with disabilities, who are historically underserved.

Receiving a free and appropriate public education, with opportunities for meaningful growth, is their civil right.

PART ONE of this request is for office supplies to help us produce the materials our students need: copy paper, paper cutter, 3-hold puncher, binders, staplers that can withstand this challenging classroom environment, and teacher scissors that won't cause repetitive strain injuries.

PART TWO is for items to keep the environment organized and predictable: whistles for all classroom staff, a doorbell to signal transitions, a remote control pointer for our big-screen interactive display, storage bins, card pockets for labeling these bins, a label maker, packing tape, and a paper sorter.

PART THREE is for incentives for following behavioral expectations and meeting learning goals. We avoid using edible incentives and instead allow students to earn "choice time" during which they can play games that rely on logic (Rubik's cube), develop fine motor skills (Jenga, maze ball), and provide calming or alerting sensory input (fidget toys, kinetic sand). These items are all fun and motivating.
