My students need balances that are accurate for measurement and calculations in chemistry and AP chemistry.

My Students
Imagine working diligently to make sure all calculations are exact, carefully pouring out the right amount of chemicals, only to find that the experiment you are trying to perform is not working quite right due to the limitations of the measuring tools provided to you.
My students attend a Visual and Performing Arts School in an Urban school district.
98% of my students have free or reduced lunch and similarly, 98% of my students are of a minority race. Science is often not their favorite subject and thus I try to incorporate as many hands-on activities and real life scenarios as possible to help them connect what we learn to the real world. To make this more understandable for my students, however, requires appropriate resources.
My Project
The whole point of chemistry is to relate it to the world in which we live. Yet, that becomes a challenging endeavor when the balances being used are so inaccurate, that answers never seem to match up with known figures. Additionally, it becomes challenging to teach significant figures and emphasize their importance in the lab when the balances they use round to the nearest whole number. Especially with more challenging labs in an AP chemistry curriculum, the scales provided limit the degree to which students can interpret and analyze data. I want my students to work through precise and accurate calculations and it becomes difficult to motivate them in that regard when they cannot measure with the same degree of accuracy.
The science of chemistry is a very precise science, and without the accurate tools to use, my students are limited by the lack of exposure to accurate measuring devices.
My students deserve to have the appropriate tools to perform accurate experiments in the lab and I just want to provide them with that opportunity.
