I work at a visual and performing arts school. Ninety-eight percent of my students are on free and reduced lunch, as they come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. They are remarkably talented artists, dancers, musicians, and performers, yet most are not (initially) excited when entering a science classroom. I want to prepare them for the world by challenging them to think critically about the world around them, pushing them to persevere through challenges, and inspiring them to take action within their own communities. Having a strong science and critical thinking education could open many doors for my students, and I hope that by taking this class, I can provide greater opportunities for my students' futures.
