A Good Book is Hard to Find

Help me give my students the opportunity to explore thought-provoking themes, enhance critical thinking, and engage in meaningful discussions about faith, redemption, and the darker aspects of humanity through the lens of Flannery O'Connor's compelling short stories.

My Project

What I love most about my dual enrollment students is their drive to challenge themselves academically and their readiness to engage with rigorous material. They’re ambitious, thoughtful, and unafraid to tackle complex texts and big ideas. Even more inspiring, they continue to thrive in an underserved community and attend a Title I school, where resources are limited but their determination is limitless. Many are first-generation college-bound students who understand the value of education and show up each day ready to learn, lead, and grow.

Flannery O’Connor’s "A Good Man is Hard to Find and Other Stories" is the perfect literary companion for students enrolled in college-level English courses.

Her stories demand close reading, critical thinking, and in-depth analysis of themes like morality, grace, identity, and the human condition—skills essential for success in college writing and literature courses. O’Connor’s Southern Gothic style also provides an excellent opportunity to explore genre, tone, irony, and symbolism.

Providing my students with their own copies of this text will allow them to annotate deeply, engage more fully in discussions, and build the analytical skills needed for literary scholarship. These books will not only support their academic achievement but also remind them that they are capable of mastering college-level work, even in the face of challenges. With the right tools, they can—and do—excel.
