Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My group of energetic, creative, and curious kindergarten students loves to gather on our classroom rug to listen to stories, make connections with each other, and hang out during free choice time working with our STEM manipulatives.

Providing a clean, soft, and cozy area to gather on our classroom rug, is one of the most successful ways to support and encourage growth in students.

With the addition of a classroom rug, students will have the opportunity to develop their sense of a community of learners, working and learning together. I know the invaluable learning that can come from students having a connection with each other as well as with the teacher. A typical morning in my classroom consists of students arriving and gathering together on the rug, talking about their adventures at home, making plans for the day, and sometimes just decompressing from the morning rush of getting to school. Throughout the day, we gather to listen to stories, write stories, solve math problems, build with STEM and building manipulatives, sing songs, and share and learn in various ways.

My students come from a variety of home structures. Some have had the opportunity to attend preschool and they are well prepared for kindergarten while others have never been to school and are dealing with social, academic, and cultural challenges. By providing a safe and cozy gathering place, my kindergarten students can begin taking risks with their learning.
