A Good Book a Day Keeps the Failing Students Away

Help me give my students an engaging, relevant classroom library full of important books that teach resilience, tolerance, and kindness.

My Students

My students are mostly incoming freshmen (13-15 years old). Do you remember the stress and excitement of starting high school? I tackle teaching these hormone-filled youngsters English each day (The drama! The angst! The feeling of connecting to Romeo and Juliet!). My classes are filled with a range of both reading and socio-economic levels, which means I am always looking for ways to differentiate my lessons, reach a wider audience, and keep my curriculum relevant and interesting.

Many of my students are resistant readers and my main focus is to push them to discover the joy and importance of reading in our world today.

As we come out of the haze of distant learning, I am looking to update my classroom library with books filled with resilient protagonists tackling issues with mental health, racism, and bullying.

My Project

As my students are coming from almost a year and a half of distance learning and we learn to adjust to the challenges of teaching during a pandemic, I am looking to refresh my curriculum. We need to instill hope, resilience, and kindness into the new generation of students.

As an English teacher, I have become very aware of the lack of diversity among the authors we teach and am looking to rectify this issue by securing books from more people of color about more relevant issues.

Students learn through reading so I want to expand my library to include more engaging books that can keep kids turning pages instead of the ever-present screen-time trap.

My last goal of updating my classroom library is getting more books that address mental health. Too many students are struggling in silence and can often find hope when reading about characters similar to themselves.
