What makes our students different than other students? Well they make up 16% of the student body at our school with their unique learning styles and sensory needs. We are special education teachers who are embracing the learning styles as well as sensory needs of our students in this world of education that is constantly evolving and changing.
Today's students are experiencing sensory overload and need to be re-grounded while utilizing tools to redirect their focus back to academic and life successes.
We embrace how our students are different and help them navigate their emotional and sensory needs but our students also need additional tools to assist them as they struggle with understanding social situations due to their learning styles, sensory and emotional needs.
My Project
Students who struggle with academic achievement might also have emotional and sensory deficits that impacts their success in school as well as social situations. Our students could learn how to manage their behaviors and bounce back quicker utilizing therapy putty and/or manage their outburst, anxiety, or disruptive body movements by using a wobble stools or a therapeutic bounce of a yoga ball.
By utilizing sensory supports it can help to level the playing field.
Every day people are finding comfort in sleeping with a weighted blanket to help promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. Imagine what that type of a tool could do for a students with anxiety or sensory deficits. Students will be able to develop coping skills with teacher supports while using tools such as hand fidgets, therapy putty, weighted blanket, and alternative seating choices. Once they have developed these skills it will allow them to know not just how to recover from an emotional/sensory moment but what tools they need. This will ultimately impact them now and later in life.
