Imagine walking into your favorite coffee shop...what do you see? Tables and chairs, high-top tables, couches and other comfortable places to sit I'm sure. Why? We all work best in different spots. So why not have a classroom set up the same way?! Traditional classrooms are known for having rows of desks however this type of setup up is not always best for learners in a special education classroom. By having flexible seating within the classroom, students are able to pick a seat that helps them focus on the skills and concepts taught rather than be distracted by uncomfortable seating. Research shows that a variety of chairs and seating styles are necessary tools within a classroom environment that helps to facilitate methods of pedagogy and strategies for improving learning, engagement, and attention. This will allow my students the opportunity to have a classroom set up for their unique needs and learning styles in order to decrease the physical and mental distractions. This flexible seating classroom would promote a learning environment in which students have a seating option that would promote student engagement, increase participate while getting the stimulus they crave without being a distraction to those around them with the end result of mastering concepts presented in class.
