In order to keep students engaged and able to compete in the 21st century, they need technologically forward learning tools. Students need to be introduced and become sufficient users of these various applications and tools. Technology is hands-on, motivating, and can improve student achievement.
I teach a diverse class of second graders in a Title I school in South Carolina.
Many come from single-parent homes considered low in socioeconomic status. They are eager to learn and are very excited when they can incorporate technology into their learning. Many students do not have the opportunity or access to technology outside of the classroom.
My Project
My students would be able to perform numerous tasks using an android tablet. They would be able to create and use QR codes, view videos from Animoto and Kerpoof, and use the applications associated with these tablets. Having access to the many applications in the android market will help them in skills ranging from phonics to math fluency. Taking pictures and videos will allow opportunities to learn how to upload and develop creative products they can share with their peers. Students could use this tablet to research curriculum content and then create QR codes to guide other students through their learning. Students could use the device independently or in pairs. The possibilities and opportunities are endless.
I think about my students leaving second grade and having the skills necessary to navigate an android tablet and all of the necessary applications that go along with it.
They are then ready to build on that knowledge with new and upcoming technology skills. Having the access to this device will motivate, engage, and improve achievement as students enjoy a hands-on learning experience that will deepen their understanding of any subject matter.
