This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing examples of the power of resiliency, hope, and the desire to succeed. Students at our school come from countries across the globe at times escaping war, poverty and traumatic experience. They arrive in the US with the goal to create a better life for themselves and their families. Our students must learn English, adapt to life in the United States, sometimes while working full time and helping to support their families in the US and back home.

Every day I walk into the school and the students' positive outlooks and and astounding efforts put forth, despite various barriers, fills me with hope for our future.

Our school is a small, Title I school. All students are ELLs and are living in or below the poverty level, yet they arrive every day to work towards their future.

My Project

While learning to read, write and analyze is extremely important in education, it is impossible to do these things without proper food and hygiene necessities.

Many of my students experience food and housing instability and since the pandemic, these issues have been highlighted.

Food such as soups, rice and beans can help students feel nourished and have more energy to learn. Hygiene products such as soap, deodorant and laundry detergent can help students to have one less monetary issue to think about. It is so difficult to concentrate on learning if you don't know where your next meal will come from or if you have enough money to buy toothpaste.

These simple, basic materials that include food and hygiene products will immensely help my students to be able to concentrate on learning and not on their rumbling stomachs.
