Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year, I'm moving into a brand-new classroom space to better support my middle school students' unique and diverse needs. I'll be working with approximately 110 students. Many of my students are bilingual learners—developing their skills in both English and Spanish—and my goal is to create a classroom environment that reflects, respects, and celebrates their cultures and identities.
This classroom will be a flexible, multi-use space where students come for language development, academic support, and social-emotional check-ins.
It's important to me that this room serves as a place for learning and a safe, welcoming, and calming environment where students feel seen and supported.
To help achieve this, I'm focusing on two key components: meaningful classroom decor and an expanded calming corner. The decor will include bilingual posters, visual aids, cultural displays, and motivational quotes—all designed to reinforce a positive mindset, support academic engagement, and build cultural pride.
The calming corner is a dedicated area within the classroom where students can go when they're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or in need of a mental break. It will have soft seating, sensory tools, calming visuals, reflection activities, and grounding resources. For many students, especially those who may be navigating challenges at home, social pressures, or the difficulties of learning in two languages, having access to a peaceful, nonjudgmental space is critical for emotional regulation and overall well-being.
This classroom will be a central hub of daily connection, support, and learning. Whether they're here to strengthen their reading skills, build vocabulary, ask for help on an assignment, or take a few moments to reset emotionally, I want them to feel that this room belongs to them.
