Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a group of 24 vibrant Transition Kindergarten students in an urban neighborhood. All students at our school receive a free or reduced price breakfast and lunch. Most are learning English as their second language. For most, my classroom is their first school experience. They arrive at school every day eager to learn and grow.
They are our school's youngest learners and need a balanced curriculum with both play and academics in order to reach their potential.
They are always excited to try new things.
My Project
My students spend more than half of their day in our group meeting space sitting on our classroom rug. They sit there for group activities, and they play there during our center time. Our current rug is several years old and is showing the signs of wear that comes from 24 students per day walking and sitting on it. It is dirty and stained. My students need a fresh, clean place to sit and to keep them healthy and happy. A new rug is not in the school budget and is something that my students really need. The rug we are requesting has a designated spot for each child and will help them learn self regulation and give them personal space.
