A Fraction of an Inch

My students need the basic rulers that may lack the "cool" factor, but are uniform in showing fractions of an inch.

My Students

Our students have been having a great time learning about fractions this year. However, when we started measuring using our rulers, we quickly found that not all rulers are the same. The differences really make it difficult to find the quarter inches in measuring with a ruler!

We have a determined grade level of learners at our school.

Whatever you ask of them, they will do and go beyond with smiles on their small faces. If it's hard, they do it anyway. If they are having a bad day, they smile anyway. But most importantly, each day they show us teachers why we are so passionate about our job.

My Project

Our 3rd graders provide their own rulers. Each child comes to class with a ruler that definitely shows his/her personality! These rulers bend, snap, pop, are clear, pink, yellow, and some of them can talk too! However, this is not very helpful when we are trying to connect fractions with measuring. With each ruler being different, it is quite difficult to teach/show fractions of an inch in a uniform way. For example, if Billy's ruler only shows inches and half inches, he has a hard time actually visualizing one fourth and three fourths inch on his ruler. With the purchase of these uniform rulers, we will be able to label and color each quarter inch so the students can actually see where 3 and three fourth inches is located. They will then more easily make a connection to fractions and measuring.

This donation will improve our measuring skills, help us to connect fractions to measuring, and simply improve a life skill of measuring.

Every child will measure and use rulers, tape measures, etc. during their life. Please help us to give them a good start! Thank you.
