My Students
Coming from a diverse mix of socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnicities, and learning abilities, my students need fair and equitable access to technology. I teach at a Title 1 public middle school in San Francisco and not all of my students have access to a computer to complete their assignments with confidence and ownership. Integrating technology in my classroom helps my students stay engaged. Some of my students have been using mobile devices like smartphones to play and learn since they could crawl, but more than half have not.
I want to provide my students with the opportunity to utilize and access technology in my classroom to enhance their learning experiences and create new opportunities for them to collaborate, communicate effectively and connect with each other while supporting various learning styles.
A Chromebook for each student will provide my students the access they deserve to develop their critical thinking skills, active participation through community engagement and creative expression.
My Project
A Chromebook for each of my students will help them write, read, and create. In my English class, my students are not limited to just a class set of readers, textbooks or novels. I use the power of theater and creative writing as a means for them to develop and explore their own experiences through words and visual performance. My students write original monologues and 10-minute plays to express their ideas and emotions, problem-solve, collaborate and build empathy through the analysis of a character's actions and response. They research, write and edit and repeat, then perform.
They understand that the power of their words creates dialogue and meaning when they share their experiences through scriptwriting and performance, their storytelling is a form of activism.
“Theater is a language through which human beings can engage in active dialogue on what is important to them. It allows individuals to create a safe space that they may inhabit in groups and use to explore the interactions which make up their lives. It is a lab for problem-solving, for seeking options, and for practicing solutions.”—Augusto Boal, Theatre of the Oppressed
