Our program is a transitional restorative learning environment open to general and special education students in grades 8-12. These students all have different socioeconomic backgrounds, family supports, and learning strengths. What they do have in common are similar struggles with behavioral, emotional, or social difficulties. Some of these difficulties have impeded their ability to learn, focus, and achieve in a typical learning environment. When they come to us we help students see that those difficulties don’t have to impede their ability to succeed with the right supports.
Students have been identified as being school avoidant as a result of anxiety, depression, or PTSD.
Some come from outside institutions such as: hospitals, residential facilities, or rehabilitation centers. Our focus is to provide students with a transitional learning environment that promotes emotional growth, responsible behavior, and academic success while learning how to reintegrate into a traditional school or work environment in a healthy manner.
We work with students by creating a mindfulness practice, reviewing social emotional learning topics, reframing thinking traps through cognitive behavioral therapy approaches, developing new work habits, and strengthen their executive functioning skills. We create individualized learning plans and therapeutic supports to meet their emotional and academic learning needs.
My Project
We are all guilty of spending to much time glued to our phones, but this is an even bigger issue for teens that are still developing their executive functions skills. Phones have so many great uses but they also distract students from work, allow for cyber bulling, have been linked to increased anxiety, and decreased resiliency. As educators we battle everyday with students that are resistant to putting away their phones. They go away for a moment and then are slipped out of a pocket or a bag for a quick glance on Insta or to message a friend. They are taken away and the cause of many parent meetings.
This is no longer a little issue, students are dealing with social media addictions and have psychological or behavioral dependence on social media platforms.
How do we help students that can't seem to self-monitor their behaviors? We have seen the success of security pouches at concert venues to prevent people from using their phones during performances. We would like to use this same concept in our class. We want students to be able have their phones in their possession but have the access be monitored by their teachers.
Our plan is to help students learn how to increase their ability to self-monitor their access to electronics based on their educational success. We are not purchasing these packs for every student. Some students are able to appropriately integrate phone access and class work. We want to highlight their success and help those that need more support be able to hold on to their phones but not have ready access. Phones will be unlocked at various points throughout the day based on their work production. We hope that this will help students learn how to monitor as themselves as they become adults.
