"How can we expect our students to solve problems and make choices independently if we constantly solve their problems and make their choices for them? Our classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. This isn't done in rows."
My students are a diverse group from a suburban/rural area.
In AVID, they are determined doers and achievers. Most of my students will be first generation college students or face significant obstacles to getting into and/or finishing college. They are striving to be more and be better than our high poverty school label.
My Project
My students are constantly called on to collaborate and work together which can only happen if we move every piece of furniture in the room to make space. We need these eight stability ball chairs that allow us to move around and talk and meet with each other, providing space to lay materials out and work with them. Every week we get in tutorial groups to work on other subjects and are limited by a table to allow us to sit together.
Research shows that "some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture .
. . linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior." But more than the physical benefits is the power of them creating the learning environment that they need based on the work assigned.
