I will start this year in a smaller classroom and my goal is to make the most out of this space!
Flexible seating will be a great start!
My name is Sydney and I am gearing up to start my third year of teaching. I have spent the last two years teaching fourth grade in title I schools. This coming year I will be moving to third grade at Northwood Elementary and I couldn't be more excited!
I love teaching and love watching my students thrive, especially when faced with obstacles. During the past two years I have seen many students struggle with ADD, ADHD, and autism (just to name a few) in my classroom. It is those students who have inspired me to change things up and start a Donors Choose project for flexible seating!
I truly believe flexible seating options will benefit my students because I have seen it firsthand. In the past I have been able to come up with flexible options for a kiddo or two in my room, but because of the lack of resources I couldn't offer those same options to all students in my classroom.
My Project
My students will be able to take pillows to their desks or around the room. They will be able to keep their blood flowing with bouncy bands on their chairs. Each item on this list will allow my students to feel comfortable and ready to learn, while also encouraging them to take part in our classroom community and to take responsibility for their own learning.
Giving my students options like balance balls will include them in the decision making process, help them learn problem-solving skills, and allow them to take control of their learning.
Giving students an opportunity to be responsible will benefit them in all walks of life. Having options will force them to make a decision and see what has resulted from that decision. They will have to find a solution when someone takes the equipment that they hoped to use or when they aren't able to focus because of a new distraction. They will have to figure out which options work fabulously for them and which options aren't so fabulous! THEY will make decisions that will help them be the best they can be!
