I am the sole second-grade teacher in a small, rural school district in northern Maine. Our school suffered a devastating fire in July of 2021, and as a result, we are rebuilding our classrooms from scratch. It is my goal to engage my students in everyday learning tasks to pique their curiosity so they are energized and excited to enter our classroom each day.
I want to give my students the gift of learning and reading through meaningful opportunities and areas in our classroom for educational growth that makes them think, communicate, problem-solve, invent, and cooperate!
In our school, we celebrate growth, encourage one another to work through challenges, and pride ourselves on our achievements, no matter how large or small. We believe in educating the whole child through multi-modal approaches, exposure to various technologies, hands-on experiences, and collaboration. We function like a family, support one another, and strive to do our very best. Our amazing little school rewards students with positivity, physical fitness, and STEM challenges to keep the internal motivation of students high. Our staff truly puts forth its absolute best efforts to give our students what they need!
My Project
Second graders need movement, in fact, they crave it! In our classroom, we transition every 15 to 20 minutes into new activity to keep our focus and engagement high. We also participate in brain breaks throughout the day. Seating options also help to provide gentle movement and comfortable spaces that help students feel safe and ready to learn. Voice and choice in seating empower students to do their best work!
We currently have a place for 20 students in our classroom, however, the incoming class of second graders has 21 students.
This means that one student will not have a place to sit, and I want to be sure to rectify this problem sooner rather than later. Providing students with not only a new type of flexible seating but one that is very comfortable, will allow a place for all students while promoting happiness and motivation! We are a community of learners in second grade - a family - and everyone needs a place to sit!
