I love each and every one of my 24 students and I love coming to work every day and having the opportunity to make truly meaningful differences in their lives. My students are kind, fun, silly, curious, and love to come to school each day to learn and have fun, and I will do everything I can to ensure that they have the tools to be successful. COVID-19 has made a tremendous impact on my students' lives over the course of the past year and a half. My students have been discouraged time and time again due to social distancing, assigned seating, canceled field trips and assemblies, which has been really challenging for their social emotional development. This is especially challenging since more than a third of my students come from low-income households.
However, even with all of the challenges they have faced, they are so resilient and never fail to inspire me with their positive attitudes and enthusiasm for learning.
I am so excited to see their reactions when they see all the new amazing books and seating in our classroom, they deserve a win!!!
My Project
Having flexible classroom seating and access to multicultural books that foster social emotional learning will help establish a positive classroom environment that excites and encourages students to come to school each day.
These resources will help me get my students excited about learning and teach critical social, emotional, and wellness skills that have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
During this time, it is imperative that students have access to flexible seating so that they can spread out around the classroom. Flexible seating also allows students to bounce, wobble, and rock in their seats, which increases blood flow and helps students focus. They also love it, and this will help me establish a warm, welcoming, and positive classroom environment! This combined with daily social emotional lessons on strong feelings, kindness, empathy, grit, and growth-mindset, through a variety of multicultural books, will help to bridge the social emotional gap that has widened since the start of the pandemic.
