My students are an incredible group of smart, resilient, and determined second graders. Every day, we have "light bulb" moments and exclamations of "I GET IT NOW!"
In this climate of distance learning, my students have shown incredible perseverance and flexibility as we learn and grown in an online community!
They are learning in ways they never thought they would and they are absolutely ROCKING this new world of school!
My Project
Having enough iPads to supply each child with their own while they are in our classroom would accomplish many things. Not only would students be able to always know a device is available to them when they needed it, but it would allow for me to conduct whole-class lessons while each child is using an iPad.
One specific project that I hope to accomplish is creating a blog to communicate with other classrooms across the world.
With connections in Vietnam and Taiwan, it is my hope to create a blog that would be completely designed by the students with the aim of creating something that reflects who we are as American second-graders living in Arizona. Students would be able to write text and take their own high-quality photos and videos with the iPads, which would then be added to the blog posts. Classrooms that we have then paired with would be able to access the blogs to write responses and even add their own posts. Through this, not only would we be teaching others about our culture, but our students could learn about other cultures first-hand. Finally, this would allow students an opportunity to learn how important it is to be a positive digital citizen – using kind words, being respectful, learning how to use intellectual property correctly and legally, and maintaining safety and privacy of all involved.
iPads are portable and versatile so when not being used to connect with those around the globe, they have access to an abundance of educational apps that help students continue learning. Finally, iPads have access to the Google G Suite to allow for Slides presentations, Docs word processing, and more! The uses of an iPad in the second-grade classroom are truly unlimited!
