This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach children with exceptional abilities (ESE). My students do not consider themselves to be different as they have never been taught or told otherwise. Our school is very inclusive and all children are treated equally, regardless of their diverse learning abilities or needs.
After Hurricane Irma left us devastated, it became a greater challenge to maintain the standard of work with the little we had left, and now we have started welcoming students who were displaced by Hurricane Maria.
Basic classroom supplies are now a luxury and that includes stationery, printing and printing accessories. Because of the restricted budget, I am given no choice than to recycle and reuse previously used handouts and printouts.
My ESE students cannot print what they were assigned to do on the workstation, or homework that needs to be printed. Most do not have a computer, far less a printer at home, so their only option is to copy off of the screen or find a library that allows them to print.
Without resources such as the five computer workstations in my classroom, they might never be afforded the opportunity to complete online assignments, like other students do in well-funded programs.
My Project
Our ESE classroom is in dire need of copier paper, now that we have our own color printer for our classroom. We are almost out of paper and the students need to print out projects and assignments when necessary.
The students are printing every day and we have already run out of paper in the third week of 2018!
Also, we would really love to have the extra multi-colored dry erase markers and lapboards with black dry-erase markers and erasers, so we can work math and science problems without having to waste paper. The lapboards are very convenient, saves space and mistakes can easily be erased. These supplies would help a lot for our ESE math and science classes!
