Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have over 400 curious minds who come into my classroom, each week, ready to learn about art: both the history and the practice of making it. The students I have range in age from 5-11 and grades kindergarten through 8th.
For some of my students, this is the first year they have attended my art class, and they are eager to participate!
For others, this is another year for them to learn and experience new things. My students are bright and energetic, with creative minds that shock me sometimes, with the great ideas they come up with. Many of the children I teach have a very hard home life' their parents are both working two to three jobs to scrape by, they are homeless, or they come from a broken family.
The goal of my classroom is that no matter where they come from or what is going on outside of school, the students have the same opportunities and materials as students in the schools around here. It can be hard at times, but with the support of people like you, I am able to give these students an amazing art class each year.
My Project
Students, parents, siblings, teachers, and administration all come together at the end of October to celebrate fall, eat, and have fun as a community. Everyone at the school chips in to make the night a success. The parents in our parent-teacher club fund the food area where they get pizza donations and drinks. The teachers run the activities such as face painting, carnival games, cake walk, and the favorite haunted hallway. The students help us prepare for the night by helping set up the haunted hallway (a right of passage for the oldest students) and games. On the night of the event families come and eat, play, and talk. The oldest students sit in a very hot (and smelly) hallway to scare their friends, family, and classmates.
This is a time where students get to see their teachers outside of a classroom and parents get to see them outside of parent teacher conferences.
Building these positive relationships with the community makes the school a better environment for the students. They know that we do in fact know their parents and their parents know us! So when we need to talk with them about anything we already have that foundation.
Unfortunately with the budget cuts we will be unable to provide prizes, face painting, or any new games this year. We are asking for your help to create a night where the students can come to school to have fun and enjoy being with their community.
