My Students

One of the best parts of teaching is being able share wonderful books with students. To watch children grow as readers, thinkers, and learners with great books in hand is incredible.

My students come from a range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and they bring curiosity and a love for learning to the classroom.

I teach third graders in an urban school, and there are not always the funds necessary to supply students with the tools they need for success. My students are excited to read and learn. They are avid and enthusiastic readers who love to explore new words, immersing themselves in books and then talking about what they've read with each other. The current pandemic has reduced access to libraries, and when schools are closed, it is more difficult to put quality books in students' hands.

My Project

Each fall, we delve into our first novel study of third grade. Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl is a class favorite. We use the rich vocabulary and figurative language to explore simile, metaphor, idioms, and onomatopoeia. Students explore creative projects using their texts and write TV interviews, create movie posters, and design other forms of art. This novel is a wonderful transition into studying a text deeply, while also being highly engaging.

Because we are completely remote for at least the first quarter, we will not be able to use the same shared novels we typically would in class.

This project will help provide students with personal copies of Fantastic Mr. Fox so we may read, learn from, and enjoy this favorite book together, even though we are far apart.
